Kipchumba Murkomen declares Nick Mwendwa ineligible for FKF elections

Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen has barred outgoing FKF President Nick Mwendwa from contesting in the federation’s upcoming elections, citing term limit laws. Appearing before Parliament’s Sports Committee, Murkomen emphasized that Mwendwa’s bid for vice president is legally prohibited.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday declared outgoing Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa ineligible for a senior position in the upcoming elections.
Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture on October 5, Murkomen addressed questions about the FKF elections and the broader state of sports in Kenya.

Mwendwa, who has served two terms as FKF President, hoped to remain in a leadership role by running for the vice president position under Doris Petra, his former deputy. However, Murkomen clarified that the law prevents Mwendwa from taking any top seat after serving two terms.
“For as long as we are enforcing term limits in FKF elections, it is legally untenable for a former president to run as vice president,” Murkomen stated, adding that such a move is neither “morally good” nor aligned with the intent of the law.
Murkomen’s statement presents a significant obstacle for Mwendwa, who had faced scrutiny for his decision to pursue a deputy role.
In addition to his stance on Mwendwa, Murkomen outlined several measures to ensure transparency in the December 7 FKF elections. He announced plans to deploy observers from the Ministry to oversee the election process, ensuring it meets credibility standards. Additionally, the CS emphasized strict adherence to the Sports Act, including candidate vetting through regulatory checks.
The FKF Electoral Board has also faced scrutiny, particularly for excluding several candidates from the elections. Salim Ali Said (Mombasa), Eliakim Mbaliwa (Nakuru), Bwanamku Fumo (Lamu), Isaac Munene (Trans Nzoia), Patrick Kamora (Tana River), Zablon Mwanyumba (Taita Taveta), Kefa Onditi (Nakuru), Abdisalam Ahmed (Mandera), and Daudi Ali (Wajir), among others, have all been sidelined despite claiming eligibility under the FKF electoral code.
The Electoral Board will appear before the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture later this week to address these exclusions among other issues.
